Why preference category matters?

As earlier said there is no limit on the amount of Green Cards issued to immediate relatives of the U.S. citizens. However, there is an annual limit on the amount of Green Cards to be issued to the non-immediate relatives of the U.S. citizens or immediate relatives of Green Card holders (Green Card holders cannot sponsor non-immediate relatives) who fall in the above-listed family-preference categories. After the allotted number of Green Cards are issued, the remaining applicants will have to wait until the quota becomes available to them. Waiting period depends on the priority date of the preference category a person falls into. The higher the preference the less waiting time will be.
